Sofia Gillani is an upcoming artist from London, UK. Having created a few singles in the past, she will be coming out with her newest release “Monster” this March. I had the pleasure of doing an email interview with her! Considering this was my first time interviewing someone, it was very exciting. Below are the questions and Sofia’s responses. To stay updated on Sofia and her journey in the music industry, you can find her social media at the end of the interview.
Q: Might be a bit of a basic question, but how long have you been into music?
A: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember! I started at around 6-7 years old. I did my first solo performance at age 9 In front of around 100 people at a school talent show. I released my first single ‘Ain’t a Game’ with an animation video at the same age which did really well worldwide, and since then my music career has been growing and getting more and more exciting! I’m loving the journey and enjoying all the small victories!
Q: Who/what would you say are your biggest inspirations?
A: I would say early on inspiration came from listening to Queen, Adele, Jhené Aiko, Michael Jackson, SOS band, Owl City and Charlie Puth. Over time my taste in music has become more eclectic from The Smiths, Ariana Grande, SZA, and the band IDKHTFM.
Q: Did you ever expect to live to see the day where you’d release a single?
A: I had always had a feeling I would release a single at some point. I started recording material very early on and knew these songs had to be heard. It was just deciding which one would be released first.
Thinking back the feeling of releasing my first single was overwhelmingly amazing. Putting it together from scratch from the song to the artwork to the reception it received was a super fun process. I am constantly learning about the music industry.
Q: How long have you been wanting to make music?
A: I started singing when I was around 10. I got inspired by listening to my dad play guitar and discovering particular songs in the car. Once I did my first performance at school, I was completely motivated to pursue my music creativity to see where it could go. My sound began leaning to pop music with many of my favourite influences.
Q: Favorite bands, musicians, genres?
A: I’ve always been ridiculously experimental with my songs, so I’ve explored a vast range of genres, and subsequently listened into a lot of different artists, who have become my inspiration. My taste is always changing, so I don’t necessarily have favourite songs or artists, but right now I am loving Fleetwood Mac and Charlie Puth with his new album.
Q: What was the experience of releasing this single (“Monster”) like for you?
A: I wanted to take the idea of a 'monster' and completely flip it, so people can imagine their version of a monster, and the song can act as a ‘thriller’ in itself. Every song I write is different, because my music evolves alongside me. So with 'Monster', I decided to branch into something dark, intricate, and creatively perplexing. It reminds me of a whimsically detective project, as the lyrics and the music video portray a noir sense of me. I won't spoil! But it's incredibly exciting!
Q: Anything else you’d like to say?
A: My new single ‘Monster’ is released on the 3rd of March. Do check out the full video for the track which is released on the same day! I am finishing on a EP which I’m hoping to release in May with stuff I am remarkably proud of! Follow me on my socials to stay updated!
