"Startover" by ROSIE (song & music video review)

With nostalgia and emotion at the wheel, singer/songwriter ROSIE has released upon us a brand new single; one that’ll have you losing your voice and finding pieces of yourself within the lyrics. Most everyone has experienced a relationship that tests, confuses, overwhelms. One that is so hard to give up, yet so demanding of all you have. ROSIE knows the feeling, and has delivered an anthem. Exceeding over 141 thousand streams since its release on February 3rd, "Startover" is a soaring exclamation of passion; about wanting to not lose the relationship but to restore. With such a lyrically and instrumentally profound song, ROSIE unravels her own feelings and powerful sentiments, connecting to listeners through details of personal experiences. Not only do her gentle vocals ignite the tone of the song, they’re lightly preceded by melancholy piano that travels like water over stones; rising and falling with her voice. From the first notes to the last, “Startover” will stir memories, emotions, and have listeners sighing over the flood of both. Bringing to mind the works of artists such as Blake Rose, David Hugo, and vocals similar to Sara Kays; it’s powerful, it’s raw, it’s incredibly meaningful, and it’s evident that ROSIE knows how to weave even the strongest of emotions within her songs.

Accompanying the song is a music video. Opening, shows a scene of ROSIE sitting in a simple white room, with beautiful natural light pouring in through a single window. We see a mirror and some plants for decor, and lots of tattoos all over our subject. As the video progresses, the cinematography is pieced together with lots of different angled shots, transitioning from her singing to close ups on the tattoos. We see tons of designs, ranging from floral bouquets to humans to lyrics themselves. Soon, the designs begin to disappear, leaving a blank canvas of skin in their wake. It’s a beautiful sentiment to “Startover”, since some experiences can be haunting, reminding you everyday of the struggles you had to overcome. Much like tattoos, the emotions can feel permanent. This song and video provide the perfect reminder that we can not only overcome so much more than we think, but there are many people out there that are dealing with similar struggles. People we can connect with, relate to, and feel comfortable beside. ROSIE makes sure of that reminder, and we are forever thankful.
