I had the opportunity to see Noah Kahan's sold out show in Houston to start off his Stick
Season tour with Jack Van Cleaf. I was not really sure whether or I was more excited to see Jack finally preform or see some of my favorite songs live by Kahan.
Jack Van Cleaf and I have instagram DMed very little, for a while. I have always been really impressed by his musical talent ever since I found his song, Rattlesnake. I tried to catch a show in Nashville, and have patiently been awaiting Jack's arrival to Texas. I always knew Jack Van Cleaf was destined to be big, and when I saw he was going to be joining Noah Kahan for part of his tour, I was determined to see them perform. Since joining TPZ, I have been requesting many media passes, so when I found out Jack was going to be coming to Texas, I soon asked for a media pass and he told me he would see what he could do; he did his best to get me a media pass to a couple different venues. But unfortunately he was unable to get me a media pass last minute, nevertheless I was so stoked to finally see him play live! I am also a big Noah Kahan fan, so I drove up to the show in downtown Houston immediately following my shift at work (which was three hours away,) and then made the trip back early the next morning to catch my 11:30am shift; it was well worth it.
I took one of my close friends who had never been to a concert before. I am so
happy for it to have been her first live concert experience. She said it was the most entertaining experience she has ever had. We parked close and got in line about 30 minutes before the doors opened; the line was surprisingly not too long! I had never been to the White Oak Music Hall in Houston before, but the venue was awesome overall. The amenities were well kept and those over 21 enjoyed the bar.
Kahan's show was in the inside portion which meant it was packed and stuffy, with many people ready to jam out to the self titled "Folk Malone." We made our way toward the front of the crowd and awaited the opener, Jack Van Cleaf. Van Cleaf did an amazing job, and the crowd helped him out during a technical difficulty by turning on all of their phone flashlights, and doing their best to sing along. Few people knew his songs, but they really enjoyed Jack's set and talented band members. After Jack’s set, our new made concert friends saved our spot as we went to meet Jack Van Cleaf. He was super personable and kind as he awaited to greet people at the merch stand. I am thankful for everything that Jack did to get me into the concert and for being so kindhearted.
We made our way back to the front and Kahan immediately started his show off with high energy and great sound, opening with "False Confidence". Kahan is a great performer with a very strong band to carry their amazing lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. He made a few dark humored jokes and talked about his personal walk with therapy which I know will stick with me for a while. He also played and talked about his song, "Carlo’s Song", written about a friend of his that had passed away. Hearing "Carlo’s Song" live, brought me to tears. It was really special moment to see Kahan perform it. Kahan's vocals were even more impressive in person, hitting all the notes and adding even more note changes! He continued with high energy and a high quality performance throughout the show.
The crowd was a diverse crowd with many folks who were very kind. I gave few people
in the crowd hugs as we parted ways, as music and concerts tend to bring about special bonds. This concert was no exception to the unity that live music often has upon the fans in venue settings like this; most of the people there were kind and personable.
Overall, it was an amazing show with very talented musicians, and one of a kind music. It was easily one of my favorite concerts I’ve attended. I will definitely be making my way back to the White Oak Music Hall, and would love to shoot a show for Noah or Jack one day.
